White Oak

White oaks are one of the most common trees in Eastern North America. They grow slowly at first but can become quite large and can live for hundreds of years. They feed wildlife with their acorns and are the most sought after acorns in areas where they are abundant, often disappearing within days of falling off the tree. In the Western Catskills, they are considered shade intolerant and grow more slowly than many pioneer trees, making them relatively rare. However, they are abundant in drier, rockier soils that are found in the Shawangunks and Eastern Catskills. These seedlings are New Jersey ecotype.
