Rosinweed is a native of the midwestern prairies where it is a keystone species. However, we have grown this species for several years in New Jersey, and it successfully stratified over winter in the Catskills. It is tolerant of acidic and dry soils and is being investigated as a perennial edible oilseed by the Land Institute. It does not spread and is easy to direct seed, and will flower within two years. These beautiful plants have bright yellow flowers and grow to be around 4 feet tall, but are not prone to flopping. While the seeds are likely edible, they are hard to separate from their papery husk. We are working on a good methodology for that. These seedlings are grown from seed from Prairie Moon Nursery.
