Red oak is the dominant oak in the Catskills, present in modest numbers on most soil types, unlike white oaks which are only present on drier soils in the Catskills. Red oaks typically occupy sunnier spots along roadsides but can also be found more rarely in denser forests. They produce copious acorns but do not produce annually. As with other oaks, they are a promising candidate for food production, but are limited by the high tannin content of the acorns which requires substantial processing to remove. Due to its wide range of uses, this is our most recommended tree (along with shagbark hickory) for any mass reforestation planting. We have Catskill and New Jersey ecotype seedlings.
