Black Walnut

Black walnuts are one of the most productive native nut trees. Their leaves have a unique aromatic scent and the nuts are edible but encased in a hard shell which requires a heavy-duty cracker (or a nice rock). Black walnuts are a common component of valley forests. They resprout well after cutting and produce great timber. They are also a quintessential silvopasture tree due to their low density foliage which allows a lot of light into the understory. These are Catskill Ecotype seedlings.
