American persimmon

American persimmon are native persimmon trees that are hardy to zone 5. These bright orange fruit are best when they've been able to ripen on tree through fall. When fully ripe they have an intense sweet flavor that is more complex than the typical Asian persimmons found in the grocery store. These are seed grown from a tree in central New Jersey which produces fruit annually, and have proven to be hardy to the Catskills, although its too soon to say whether the season is long enough for ripe fruit for us. We recommend planting at least 4 trees, as persimmons are Dioecious, meaning that they can be either male or female. Only female trees plant fruit, while both are needed for cross pollination. Since we are growing seedlings, we cannot determine whether our trees are female or male.
