Common Name: American Elm
Binomial: Ulmus Americana
These 1 year bareroot elm seedlings originate from a mature American Elm in Princeton, New Jersey, where some of the first Dutch Elm Disease (DED) Resistant elms were bred. These trees should display at least some level of resistance to DED.
The American Elm was once a popular street tree and prominent tree in eastern floodplain forests. The introduction of Dutch Elm Disease in the early 1900s led to a major decline in this species, particularly mature trees in urban settings. American Elms still persist in wild settings but mature elms are more sparse and they often succumb to DED when they get older. Although these seedlings come from Princeton due to their potential for disease resistance, elms are plentiful throughout Catskills river valleys.
