Name: Lesesne Hybrid Chestnut
Binomial: Castanea dentata x mollisima x crenata
These 1 year bareroot chestnut seedlings grown from seed collected by Twisted Tree Farm in Lesesne State Forest in Virginia. They show a higher amount of American Chestnut traits.
Chestnuts are cold hardy nuts that are great candidates for nut production in the Catskills. We have planted dozens of Chestnuts on a range of soil types with wide success. Their only major preference is that the soil be well-draining. Overly waterlogged soils are not preferable.
While our own trees are only a few years old, there are several mature trees in our area. Unfortunately we are unable to know how high the nut production is due to poor pollination, as most of the mature chestnut trees are isolated from each other. As a result, we highly recommend planting at least 5 trees at a time, at 15 ft or more spacing. Mature trees require full sun, while seedlings can develop in part shade or full sun.
